                        TAKING ON WATER

Bush’s ship of state is taking on water – lots of it. Gallup finds 65% of Americans disapprove of Bush’s performance as the head of state while on 32% approve.  Bush’s approval rating is only 1% above its all time low according to Gallup and has tied his all time high in disapproval.

Bush lost -4% in approval rating since Gallup’s January 18, 2006 poll release. TPJ finds that the loss of -4% within a period of less than three weeks striking.  At the end of this article we have appended all 207 polls that Gallup has issued since 9/11.  Of the 207 polls only 16 other polls in which Bush’s approval rating fell -4% or greater from one poll to the next.

The drop of -4% represents literally millions of Americans.

In our estimation, Bush’s continued involvement and escalation in the Iraqi civil war continues to drive Americans to oppose Bush.  The findings of Rasmussen that attitudes against the war in Iraq, covered in TPJ’s article  “CHANGES” today, supports the association between the two polling firms’ findings.

Gallup highlights these findings:

Bush has not had an approval rating above 40% since last September, and has not been above 50% in any Gallup Poll in nearly two full years (March 2005).

Republicans are still largely supportive of Bush -- 78% approve of him in the latest poll.

But fewer than one in four independents (23%) and 1 in 10 Democrats (7%) approve.

Bush's approval rating among Democrats has been below 10% in every Gallup Poll since mid-October 2006. By comparison, Gallup never recorded a sub-10% approval rating for Bill Clinton among Republicans. His lowest support among the opposition party's supporters was 13% during the late summer and fall of 1994.

On specific issues; Bush cannot muster majority support in any category tested by Gallup. Well note that only Bush’s handling of terrorism and the economy exceed his overall approval rating of 32%. Those who approve of his policy in Iraq is down to 26%.

Is the Gallup poll signaling another substantial shift downward?  Five or six new polls over the next weeks will answer the question with clarity.
